Significant new developments in the design of automobile engines and controls are briefly surveyed. A concerted design effort is noted toward improving every type and size of engine to meet the strict federal requirements for fuel economy and emissions control. Novel designs include: a crossflow cylinder head that improves engine breathing; turbochargers which boost the power of a relatively small engine at times of need without affecting its low fuel consumption at periods of light load; feedback-controlled carburators; and some new versions of diesel engines.
