BATTERIES MOVE UP THE POWER LADDER

Current developments in primary and secondary batteries are highlighted. At the low-power end of battery usage, nickel-cadmium batteries are competing with lead-acid and lithium batteries. In the case of high-power batteries, the lead-acid battery is competing with all the newcomers. Advances in the batteries for electric vehicles are also discussed. General Motors is experimenting with a Zinc-Nickel-Oxide battery, which in its present state has a specific energy of about 70 w-hr/kg, permitting the 160-Km range electric car application.
