HIGHWAY HISTORY: MODERN TURNPIKE ERA RECOUNTED

Early history of the development of revenue bond financing of transportation projects is outlined including advances in engineering technique and policies. The origins of the original 160-mile Pennsylvania Turnpike from Middlesex (near Harrisburg) to Irwin (near Pittsburgh) on 3% grades is reported. The method of financing, the pace of construction and novel techniques and design innovations are reviewed.
