SELECTED METHODS FOR MEASURING TEMPERATURE AND STRAINS IN HIGHWAY STRUCTURES

AUSGEWAEHLTE METHODEN FUER TEMPERATUR- UND DEHNUNGSMESSUNGEN AN STRASSENKONSTRUKTIONEN

The author reports on the necessity for and the areas of application of temperature and strain measurements. The requirements are discussed of the measurement indicating device, the connecting leads and the measuring and recording instruments, for example motor-compensators, falling trigger plotters and cross coil indicators. Their incorporation into black-top and concrete slabs is described in detail with photographs. Strain measurement which is only possible using electrical methods is discussed (measurement of the resistance). With these, the change in resistance is evaluated according to the basic principle of the Wheatstone bridge. Various forms of bridge switches are discussed and described; for example the half bridge switch with an active strip and a temperature-compensation-extension measuring strip. With these the connecting leads are important: the preparation and use of special cable for measuring devices requires the utmost care. In a further chapter the running of and experiences with various measuring systems are reported. Final comments deal with the importance of these types of measuring device. /TRRL/
