The stress-strain behaviour of asphalts can be illustrated by a rheological model. It is also possible to derive a deterministically based function for compactability and from this develop representations of the necessary residual void content to avoid isotropic stress conditions. The extreme thermal stresses of 1976 led to a consideration of the resistance to deformation of bituminous roadbases. It appeared correct to improve the resistance to deformation by constructional measures. Because of its practicability the creep test was favoured for the examination of deformation behaviour. In the endeavour to construct stable bituminous road foundations rheological constraints should not remain unconsidered, since these could result in the longest possible life and avoidance of cracking. /TRRL/
