RESEARCH CONCERNING THE AFTER-EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL

UNTERSUCHUNGEN ZUM PROBLEM DER ALKOHOLNACHWIRKUNGEN

The aim of the investigation was to obtain information concerning the objectively and subjectively perceptible after-effects of alcoholic excesses. For this purpose drinking tests were carried out with the aid of 29 experimental subjects (vpn). The amount of alcohol consumed was left to the subjects. 12 individuals were free from alcohol 16 hours after commencing drinking, 10 persons exhibited small residual alcohol concentrations of between 0,13 and 0,45 pro mille, while in the case of the remaining seven concentrations of 0,58 to 1,23 pro mille were observed. In the motor performance test using the two-hand apparatus surprisingly significant impairment of performance was observed in all three groups. In the alertness test (D 2) failures proportionate to the alcohol concentration were observed. On the subjective side serious impairment of subjective performance was noted which affected especially those free from alcohol. Subjective hangover effects were noted more frequently by the alcohol-free subjects than among those with low alcohol concentration, and among these more frequently than among those with higher alcohol concentration. All considered themselves under the influence of alcohol, surprisingly even those who were sober and who estimated alcohol concentrations of about 0,5 pro mille; hardly different from those with high alcohol content, who thus made the expected error in the sense of underestimation. The test subjects with low alcohol concentrations made the most accurate estimates of their bolld alcohol content. /TRRL/
