PSYCHIC CAUSES AND BACKGROUND CONDITIONS IN ACCIDENTS

PSYCHISCHE URSACHEN UND HINTERGRUNDBEDINGUNGEN BEI UNFALLVERLAEUFEN

Traffic accidents resulting from mistakes in behaviour, as shown in official statistics, are not described accurately by current legal classifications. Investigations by Undeutsch and Spoerer, whose work is summarized, show the need for a psycho-explorative formulation in order to clarify the problem of accident causes. They show evidence of psychic processes and their background conditions, which are the main components for causing accidents. Other investigations at the location of the accident, especially those of engineers, have not considered existing psychological research results sufficiently, and they have again partly created categories which approximate to those of official statistics. It was difficult therefore to make comparisons between different investigations at the location of the accident. From a comparison of selected categories which are technically formulated, with those which have been formulated psychologically, the advantage of psychological categories can be derived; this is based on work done by U. Undeutsch. /TRRL/
