INVESTIGATIONS INTO THERMOPLASTIC COMPOUND BITUMEN, PART 1

UNTERSUCHUNGEN AN THERMOPLASTCOMPOUNDIERTEN BITUMEN, TEIL 1

In order to determine the influence of high polymer additives on the properties of bitumen and asphalt mixes, thermoplastic - bitumen mixes were studied with conventional and highway engineering test methods (impact method, Marshall test, axial tensile test after Weinert). In this fashion a Schwedt bitumen 200 was mixed for a mixing time of 5 minutes with 2% to 3% by weight of polyethylene waste granules or polyethylene soft wax and miravithen granulate mixture (ethylene - vinyl acetate copolymerisate). An attempt was also made to develop a relation between the structure and the properties from the microscopic picture of the mixture and the values obtained in laboratory tests. The results demonstrate that the addition of thermoplastic has a beneficial effect on most of the properties of bitumen and asphalt (Marshall stability, tensile splitting strength, deformation behaviour). The addition of miravithen was found to be particularly effective. In the test it was also established that individual thermoplastics can be responsible for differing patterns of properties. /TRRL/
