The provision of tunnels for traffic or energy supply requires the maximum possible attention to sealing against water infiltration, which must be taken into account and designed for at the planning stage. A brief study is presented on the aims and functions of preliminary sealing and various techniques. For the actual insulation, the most frequently used materials, their range of applications, advantages and disadvantages are presented. Plastic materials for insulation are handled in detail. No long term experience has yet been obtained of the plastic sheeting which is now in use, so that hitherto only certain minimum demands have been placed on the material. The life of a dense insulating material depends on the nature of the subsoil and the protective methods employed. Extensive details are presented of individual systems of laying with advantages and disadvantages. It is particularly recommended that during the total construction operation the conditions obtaining must be taken into account. On these depend the choice of insulating enclosure, the most suitable treatment of the foundation soil, the nature of the protective layer employed, the method of laying of insulation and the surveillance of the work. /TRRL/
