GROUNDWATER DRAINAGE BY MEANS OF A PLASTIC NON-WOVEN MATERIAL FOR FAST CONSOLIDATION OF SOILS WITH LOW BEARING CAPACITY

The A9 "Pyhrn-Motorway" crosses the "Selzthaler Moor" in the region of the Selzthal intersection. Four different methods for stabilizing the subsoil for producing the necessary embankment were tested in extensive experiments: (1) placing the embankment material after placing a non-woven material on the peat layer, (2) strengthening the peat layer, placing a non-woven construction material followed by embankment fill, (3) fill on top of a non-woven material placed on the peat, whereby a horizontal displacement within the embankment was prevented by a support structure, (4) vertical drainage. Special attention was given to the application of non-woven material for vertical drainage. Placing was carried out hydraulically. The speed of fill placed in the construction of the embankment was 0.30 M per day. During the first stage fill was placed to a height of 2.5 M. After a break of 9 days to allow for consolidation to prevent cracks in the ground, fill was placed to the final height of 5 M. In the region of the vertical drainage the following were recorded by way of measurements made with transmitters for settlement and pore water pressure: a fast consolidation process, a fast drop in pore water pressure even during the placing of fill and the embankment giving way a little sideways. Finally it was established that plastic material fulfils the requirements for the construction of vertical drainage with respect to technical and economical considerations as regards fast stabilization of this peat soil. /TRRL/
