EXPERIENCES WITH BOUND AND NON-BOUND ROAD BASES - THE INTERPRETATION OF RECENT RESEARCH FINDINGS - PART 1

ERFAHRUNGEN MIT UNGEBUNDENEN UND GEBUNDENEN TRAGSCHICHTEN - AUSWERTUNG NEUER FORSCHUNGSERGEBNISSE. TEIL 1

For the further development of non-bound road bases and those bound with hydraulic binders four factors have been significant: (1) the 1973 oil crisis and the effects of this on the price and availability of binders; (2) the effects of the high temperatures of 1976 in conjunction with high traffic loads; (3) increasing traffic loads in terms of numbers and weights of vehicles; (4) the use of thin courses made possible RSTO 75 which results in higher demands on the upper courses and also on the road base. The following solutions are offered: (a) the possibility of using construction materials of lesser quality, which in appropriate combinations can result in a good overall solution. (b) the use of by-products and waste products (e.g. slag and fly-ash), and (c) the reduction in the amount of construction materials required and hence, the volume to be transported, by better utilization of the material properties. Those outstanding factors which have yet to be researched are dealt with and the requirements of compilations of experience generally, and in particular the research contract conducted by the BAST (Federal German Establishment for Highways). The first series of experiments (19 sections with vibrated gravel road bases) led to void-free graded gravel - crushed stone - sand - mixes and to their specification in the TVT72. From questions put to the highway construction authorities of the Federal German states an attempt was made to obtain further information on unanswered questions. The extent of criticism was however considerably less than feared. Certainly all of the causes of problems could not be clarified. /TRRL/
