DEVELOPMENT OF A HIGHWAY DESIGN CONCEPT USING DATA PROCESSING EQUIPMENT AND DERIVATION OF AN IMPLEMENTATION PLAN

ENTWICKLUNG EINES KONZEPTS ZUR ENTWURFSBEARBEITUNG IM STRASSENBAU BEIM EINSATZ VON DV-ANLAGEN UND AUFSTELLUNG EINES REALISIERUNGSPLANES

Current practice in highway design has been using data processing for decades now, but is still characterised by previously used manual methods. In addition the new and difficult tasks arising from economic and political developments cannot be dealt with satisfactorily. This study deals with two topics: (1) "Information and computation system for highway design", it provides the basis of a new design process related to improved data processing technology on the one hand and to changed technical requirements on the other hand. The complicated relationship between manual, semi-automatic and fully automatic processes and the flow of information within each process and between processes is explained verbally and illustrated by graphical representation. (2) Setting up of an implementation plan for the realisation of the concept and the resulting research and development themes. Concrete projects have already been formulated for the first (till the end of 1977) and the second stages (to the end of 1980), they have been incorporated in the time table, assessed concerning the means required, and been assigned to the appropriate development teams. The implementation plan serves as a framework to ensure purposeful, coordinated and guided research and development work on the use of data processing in highway design. /TRRL/
