A CONTRIBUTION TO THE DESIGN OF A TUNNEL LINING IN SWELLING ROCK

This paper deals with a method of designing tunnel linings in expanding rock which is in an arbitrary 3-dimensional primary stress condition. The method is based on the expansion parameters and curves determined from oedometer expansion tests. Hence the method must take into account the difference in stress between conditions in the oedometer and the rock. A method based on elastic theory for circular tunnel linings is expanded by an elasto-plastic addition for any chosen shape of tunnel cross-section. A summary of the rock mechanics parameters of some rock types investigated is included in the paper in order to clarify more accurately the nature of these rocks. /TRRL/
