CHARACTERISTICS OF FILLERS USED IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION

CHARAKTERISIERUNG VON FUELLERN, DIE IM STRASSENBAU VERWENDET WERDEN

Methods for establishing the material characteristics of fillers and their influence on a filler-bitumen mix were tested with regard to their closeness to practice and compared. The investigation was carried out on 32 added fillers and 9 self fillers. The following methods were compared: grading, water content, swelling behaviour according to Englin, differential thermo-analytical investigations, heating test, mineralogical-petrographical investigation, grain shape factor and average length of the crystalographical-idiomorphic limit, microscopic electron tests, chemical investigations, bulk density, specific surface area, raising of the weakening point in ring and ball tests with bitumen mixes, mastic limit, bitumen ball test, vibration density, voids content with static compression, bitumen count, Marshall values, static values of small test samples. For the final investigation the following were recommended: tests to check the grading, water content, petrographical-mineralogical composition, dry porosity, absorption capacity according to Englin and, for the production tests, grading and dry porosity. /TRRL/
