WORK ON THE THEME "SAFETY OF CYCLISTS"

ARBEITEN ZUM THEMA "SICHERHEIT DER ZWEIRADFAHRER"

The following basic studies were carried out as part of the 1979 investigations into the protection of cyclists: the analysis of accidents involving cyclists; medical investigations into head injuries to cyclists; development of quality indicators for crash helmets for motor cyclists and autocyclists. The results demonstrate that skull fractures arising from impact to the head can occur even at speeds of 16 km to 20 km/hr. Crash helmets are, therefore, to be recommended even for low speeds. In further discussions of the work, the protective function of the various types of helmets is discussed. In addition, the development of a quality indicator or designation for crash helmets is described. The requirements of helmets such as shock absorption, resistance to penetration, lateral stiffness, chin strap, inner lining and visor are discussed. /TRRL/
