WALL LININGS IN HIGHWAY TUNNELS - A SPECIAL FACADE PROBLEM

WANDVERKLEIDUNGEN VON STRASSENTUNNELS - WIN SPEZIELLES FASSADENPROBLEM

Wall linings in highway tunnels do not serve only to aid the aesthetic appreciation of the structure. Within the tunnel the linings keep dripping water and icicles away from the trafficked area; light coverings reinforce the effects of the lighting installations. Noise protection problems also have to be considered. On the stretch of motorway between Weinsberg and Wurzburg two 465 M long tunnels have been lined with steel and aluminium sheets. In the arch zone 1.25 mm thick enamelled steel plates with a low c-content and imbricated overlapping have been fitted. The lower construction is of high quality steel threaded bars fixed to upat-anchors, the fixing on the threaded bars being carried out by polyamide holding nuts with backing washers and collars. The abutment zone, in which the lighting units sit, received a lining of alucobond. These 4 mm thick elastic aluminium plates have a two coat covering, are highly resistant to impact and possess high strength values. The calotte is covered with painted aluminium sheets fixed with crnist screws with chloroprene gaskets. All the plates are protected from corrosion. /TRRL/
