THE USE OF NON-WOVEN PLASTIC MATERIALS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

DIE VERWENDUNG VON KUNSTSTOFFVLIESEN IM TIEFBAU

A comprehensive review is presented of the production, quality requirements, testing and various ranges of use of non-woven materials. The limits of their uses are discussed in the context of dams and highway construction, where the non-woven material results in a favourable load distribution and it should sustain higher tensile and shear stresses (reinforcing effect) and thus improve the load bearing capacity of soft foundation soils. Special applications in embankment construction are "reinforced earth" and the sandwich method of construction. In railway construction non-woven plastic materials are used as separation and filter layers. The hydraulic function of the plastic material is valuable for its use in hydraulic engineering and in the drainage of subsoil. These various possibilities of use demand extremely varied requirements of the mechanical properties in tensile and deformation behaviour, resistance to tearing and punching as well as the hydraulic properties such as filter efficiency, permeability. For this reason some test methods have been developed and coefficients defined. On the basis of examples of use, the ranges of possibilities of plastic non-woven materials and their economy are demonstrated. /TRRL/
