SUPPLEMENTARY INVESTIGATIONS FOR TESTING GRADED AGGREGATES IN THE LOS ANGELES DRUM MILL

ERGAENZENDE UNTERSUCHUNGEN ZUR PRUEFUNG VON KORNGEMISCHEN IN DER LOS-ANGELES-TROMMELMUEHLE

During work on the draft Austrian standard B3128 - "testing of natural stone and inorganic construction materials - the abrasion of aggregates and aggregate mixtures in the Los Angeles drum mill" - it was suggested that some test aggregates be additionally included to correspond more favourably with the relevant codes of practice and guidelines. In particular the test requirements of the following gradings should be stipulated: chippings 18/25 (mm) for asphalt construction, chippings 8/16 and 16/32 (mm) for concrete slabs and a chippings mixture 5/18 (mm). Further the test gradings for mechanically stabilized upper roadbases should be parabolically graded in accordance with the prescribed grading envelopes. Series of tests were carried out with varying frictional load and the knowledge gained was supplied to the committee of the Austrian standard "natural rocks". This information was subsequently incorporated in Austrian Standard B3128. Finally results of tests and experience gained when testing frost protection materials using the Los Angeles method are summarized. /TRRL/
