Within the framework of research projects (IRRD 700547, 700638, 700658, 701177) a series of material strength values was ascertained for 40 Austrian rocks and their derived aggregates. The following tests were used: modified Los Angeles test on particle sizes 5/8 conforming to specification and regulations for highway construction 8.111, Los Angeles test on particle sizes 5/8 and 8/12 conforming to Austrian Standard no B 3128; modified deval attrition test on particle sizes 5/8, dry and wet; shock test on particle sizes 8/2 in conformity with German specifications and the "ritz-test" (penetration depth of a rotating spike under applied surcharge). The results for the various particle sizes are only comparable with each other to a limited extent. The Los Angeles test and the crushing test describe fundamentally the toughness of the material and therefore provide similar results. The "ritz-test" determines the hardness of the constituent minerals of the stone. Should the prohibition of studded tyres not come about, the "ritz-test" provides a useful addition to the existing requirements and test procedures. /TRRL/
