STOCHASTIC PRINCIPLES FOR THE DESIGN OF STRUCTURES

Every material property, including strength, has statistical distribution with a mean value and certain standard deviations. Similarly, applied stresses also constitute some statistical distribution. Therefore, the distress cannot be prevented with certainty, and practical designs of structure should be based on some stochastic principles, rather than the purely deterministic approach being adopted presently. In this paper, the above view is presented with some computations showing the importance of the stochastic over the deterministic approach. /Author/TRRL/
