In the design of cross-sections and intersections of the highway network fundamental structural changes of land use must be taken into consideration. To these belong additional traffic generators such as industrial areas, airports, shopping centres and leisure centres. Investigations have been carried out into the traffic volumes in shopping centres and leisure centres. The introduction contains a critical evaluation of the standard publications on the subject. Actual traffic figures and oral survey results are given for four shopping centres (in Brunswick, Hildesheim, Hanover and Delmenhorst) and three leisure complexes (in "Fairyland" near Verden, in "Bird Park" near Walsrode and in the "Senne-Wild Animal Safari" near Stukenbrock). From these a description of the characteristics of customers or visitors has been determined, the temporal distribution of daily traffic volumes ascertained, the influence of the additional traffic on the access roads and neighbouring intersections appraised and the limits of the catchment area considered. Selection of the standard influence factors for the description of the traffic flow from the given possibilities was undertaken by means of factor analysis. For the quantification of the traffic flow for both the shopping centres and the leisure centres a common equation was arrived at from a regression analysis. Recommendations are given for the size of parking facilities at shopping and leisure centres. /TRRL/
