GREAT EXPECTATIONS THAT FELL BY THE ROADSIDE

The article questions the use of self-propelled bladeless compactors in high-production earthworks applications and describes in particular the use of a vibromax W1101 vibratory compactor on the clay of the m25/m26 Sevenoaks interchange. This compactor has fallen short of the manufacturers description and details are given of the problems encountered which include the lack of levelling ability and inability to get down into the scraper units. A description of further trials to be carried out with this compactor is given. /TRRL/
