DIESEL VEHICLE NOISE CONTROL

An account is given of the TRRL quiet heavy vehicle (qhv) project in which the drive-by noise level of a 238 kw (320 bhp) Rolls-Royce Engined Foden Tractor was reduced to 81 db(a). It is thought likely that a noise level of 88 db(a) will be required by 1982 in the eec with a proposed target of 80 db(a) by 1985. The method used to reduce sound emissions was by means of structural changes to the vehicle cab and the provision of a structural enclosure around the engine and transmission. The cooling system was totally ducted using a mixed-flow fan while the reactive silencer system was built to a mira design consisting of two cylindrical boxes with a total volume of 186 litres. /TRRL/
