Joint research in the UK by Aere Harwell and Johnson Matthey Chemicals has resulted in the development of platinum catalyst units for exhaust fume control, in which a metal monolith has replaced the existing ceramic substrate. Compactness is achieved through platinum catalysts being mounted on a fecralloy steel substrate 0.002 in thick fabricated to produce a high cell density. For vehicle engine application the development offers a lightweight, efficient catalyst system able to meet anticipated US legislation on exhaust emission.
