The article describes the axle weight analyser (awa) developed by the csir for measuring axle loads of moving vehicles on public roads without interfering with traffic flow. The components of the portable awa equipment consist of a 7 mm thick weight sensor attached to the road surface, a classifier for recording axle loads into groups and a battery power unit giving 4-7 days continuous operation. The equipment automatically measures wheel load data, corrects this to axle loads and displays daily readings in tabular and histogram form. The system is intended for determining traffic flow characteristics for planning purposes and is also able to present the results to suit individual requirements /TRRL/
