With Japan as a leading exporter of containerised cargo, Japanese manufacturers have developed their own equipment designs for container handling at the quayside and in the storage yard from an early stage. Indeed, container handling at Japanese terminals is recognized as being extremely sophisticated as indicated by the automatic, rubber-tyred transfer crane system installed by Mitsui/Paceco at K Line's OHI Terminal in Tokyo, details of which are outlined in this article.
