One of the newest trades in shipping, so far as specialist ships and specialist terminals are concerned, is the international deepsea transport of motor vehicles. Europe has for many years been a major exporter of cars with manufacturers like Volkswagen chartering bulk carriers specially fitted for car carriage, but it took the emergence of Japan as a world force in car manufacturing to force total specialization on the transport system. Pure car carriers capable of loading up to 6000 vehicles now operate on the major routes, ferrying cars to terminals that have specialized by having available the teams of drivers and lashing gangs necessary to work such ships and by providing the acres of storage space, so much a part of car distribution today.
