This Ain't Your Daddy's Coast Guard

The author examines ongoing change within the United States Coast Guard (USCG). Strategy for change, which has included USCG transfer from the United States Department of Transportation to the United States Department of Homeland Security, was outlined by ADM Thad Allen, USCG Commandant. This included using information sharing, intelligence, and other forms of maritime domain awareness to ensure maritime security. In relation to private and public sector partnerships, changes include increased integration and maritime planning and operational unity of effort for better incident preparation, response, and recovery. Interpersonal relationships are stressed. The author examines the development of USCG sectors, now numbering 35, and includes an overview of Sector Hampton Roads and its activities on the Chesapeake Bay. An insert provides a case study on USCG response to the November 2007 incident in which the Spirit of Nantucket ran aground.
