VIRGINIA'S EXPERIENCE IN PRESERVING HISTORIC STRUCTURES

The Virginia Highway and Transportation Research Council is currently involved with several preservation projects. One entails the preparation of a guidebook to aid local historians in the preparation of county road histories. Another involves a statewide inventory of highway structures. A survey of metal trusses has been completed, while one of concrete and masonary arches is still in progress, criteria for determining historic signifiance were developed. These were used in the state-wide survey of truss structures. 500 metal truss bridges built prior to 1932 were evaluated and 7 were finally nominated to the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
