Successful Employer-Based TDM Programs and the Role of the ETC

The role of the employee transportation coordinator (ETC) in conjunction with the success of employer-based transportation demand management (TDM) is examined. Information from two research studies demonstrates the interplay between external conditions through which trip reduction success is most apparently influenced, and organizationally-controlled external conditions. To explore ETC contributions and organizational culture affect trip reduction program success, the "human side" of trip reduction programs is also examined in these studies. The authors suggest, based on these results, what can be done by employers for trip reduction programs to be better positioned for better results and for ETCs to be empowered to take programs to a higher effectiveness level. Information on employment-related TDM available online and from the University of South Florida's Center for Urban Transportation Research is presented.
