Refurbishment of Stobcross on-ramp, Glasgow, Scotland

Stobcross on-ramp forms part of the north approaches to Kingston Bridge in Glasgow, Scotland and links eastbound traffic on the A814 Clydeside expressway with the M8 westbound carriageway. Assessments of the existing post-tensioned concrete structure found a number of major structural problems that needed to be addressed if the on-ramp was to be retained. This paper summarises these problems, discusses some of the options considered for refurbishment and describes the solutions adopted by the design-and-build contractor. Details of the complex refurbishment of the curved section of the on-ramp over the existing M8, including propping, jacking and post-tensioning, are included. The refurbishment work needed to be carried out while maintaining traffic on the M8 and surface streets beneath. This paper also describes the demolition and reconstruction of the decks of the approach ramps, concrete deck repairs and replacement of the parapets and copes over the entire length of the on-ramp and the M8 Kingston bridge westbound carriageway.
