Calypso specifications to facilitate secure interoperability

This article considers improvements in security being made for transport cards within the Calypso network. The original contactless cards provided a basis for a highly decentralised security process; and as technology improved, the applications using Calypso cards only had to change some parameters to adapt. Open procurement of cards and card readers is considered a necessity. Calypso mechanisms comply with all standardised proximity transmission protocols and can be used in new multi-application devices. Remote customer services via mobile phones or the internet are possible, as is remote application management: the technology can expand as new software is developed. It can also be limited to single transport products or payment facilities. The flexibility of the specification can allow an application dedicated to occasional trips outside the initial use area. The Calypso Networks Association exists to continue gathering experience and expertise, to enable suppliers to define common open solutions.
