Welcome to Nouville

One of the challenges faced by transport specialists is to ensure the quality of life in urban areas is preserved through the creation and operation of environmentally friendly transportation systems which provide a high level of mobility and safety. The author aims to conceptualise the design of a transportation system for a new city, from a transport engineer's perspective, rather than an architect's or urban planner's, emphasizing the application of technology with the objective of supporting and enhancing a healthy, thriving urban community. The idea is to eliminate or significantly reduce accidents, travel delays, emissions and petrol consumption, and provide access to convenient transportation services. The author looks at physical infrastructure, demand management, technology and operations, telecommunications and outcomes. The suggestions are based primarily on existing design concepts and ideas, then altering and developing them to avoid their intrinsic disadvantages. Ideas include separation of transportation modes; secure, linear pedestrian skywalks; scheduled and controlled vehicle movements, surveillance technology for security; and facilities in the city to encourage the use of telecommuting.
