Saturators set pre-wet pace

This article comments on the increasing use of brine in winter road maintenance programmes. Brine significantly contributes to the de-icing characteristics of salt, while minimising any adverse environmental impact. Pre-wetting salt and brine spraying are the most effective means of achieving the degree of accuracy required to cover surface areas and the retention on the road, of the substance, is comparably better. The use of easy to operate and maintain saturators, located at convenient strategic depots allows a tight control of materials and equipment. It is argued such positive control leads to a reduction in the amount of salt ultimately required.
