HANNOVERmobil: Turning Public Transport into a Full Service Mobility Provider
In order to draw customers from private automobile travel, public transportation must offer seamless mobility and multimodal service. This article describes a new service launched in Hannover, Germany that seeks to create an alternative to the private automobile by linking public transportation and car sharing. Since its 2004 launch as a pilot program, HANNOVERmobil has proven to be a popular and profitable service in Hannover. In the HANNOVERmobil program, customers get access to different services by using an "all-in-one" HANNOVERmobil card. Customers receive a rail discount car and are also eligible for a discount on taxi fares. Using their card, customers also can easily use more than 100 cars at 65 locations. The basic fee and costs for car sharing and taxi trips are automatically invoiced monthly. There are approximately 900 customers enrolled in the program, with an average of 60 new customers joining each month. Many of the customers are first-time subscribers to an annual public transportation pass, and more than 1/3 of HANNOVERmobil buyers either got rid of their car or decided against buying one.
