Shaping Sustainable School Transport: Attitudes, Actions and Policy
This article discusses how a positive setting for sustainable school travel can be achieved. Recent project findings on school travel suggest that a three-pronged approach is needed that combines attitudes, actions and policy. Attitude campaigns must target not only children, but also their parents. In order to convince people to use sustainable modes of transport, feelings such as fun, freedom and attractiveness should be emphasized. Another way to improve attitudes is to allow children to experience sustainable transportation modes. In turn, an appropriate policy can guide and encourage targeted actions. By working on attitudes through effective actions and a harmonizing policy, future road users can become familiar with various travel options at a young age and hopefully be convinced of the merits of sustainable transport.
