Shared Taxis in Brussels: The Missing Link in Urban Transport?

A city-wide shared taxi service will soon be launched in Brussels. This article describes the how the system was designed and the benefits that the city hopes to gain from this new service. Taxi service has a huge potential in Brussels, since it meets the flexibility and mobility demands of today's customers. Brussels' new shared ride service is positioned and designed to meet the demand for people catching the last bus or using the private car, who find individual taxis too expensive. The shared ride service will run only from midnight to 6:00 am and will allow users to make trips throughout the entire Brussels region. Passengers will need to prebook before being collected at signaled pickup points and dropped off at their destination. Passengers will pay a flat fare and must agree to share the cab and make slight detours to collect and drop off other passengers. Although potential demand for this service is hard to quantify, the hope is that the service will capture a good percentage of the 45,000 trips generated between midnight and 6:00 am in Brussels each night.
