Taxis and Private Hire Vehicles in London
Taxis and private hire vehicles play an important role in London's public transportation system. This article summarizes presentations from a recent International Association of Public Transport conference that describe this dynamic and evolving sector. A recent survey showed that 34% of London residents have used a taxi at least once and 36% have used a private hire vehicle. Overall customer satisfaction rates compare favorably to other transportation modes. Special projects are planned to improve service, especially in the area of safety, reliability, social inclusion, accessibility, service integration and cost-effectiveness. The radio taxi and private hire sectors are set to expand as they become better regulated and employ satellite tracking and navigation systems. London's traditional black taxicab also has evolved to incorporate new features that improve passenger comfort and mobility. The ability to change in response to customer needs has helped London's taxi and private hire industries to thrive and expand.
