The author addresses questions raised by discussers which relate to: the program input units; the uniformity of output results from three examples; and the desirability to set the limits for pile-load deflection to a value larger than one pile diameter. The fundamental questions of p-y curves are also discussed. For the estimation of response of a pile to lateral load, the author favors the use of the computer program and p-y curves because most of the practical problems involve the treatment of more parameters than can be dealt with in simple terms. It is impossible, however, to develop design curves for some situatons that give the engineer a good starting point. Such curves have been developed for the design of drilled shafts under lateral loading.
