PERMEABLE SYNTHETIC FABRIC MEMBRANES 2--FACTORS AFFECTING THEIR CHOICE AND CONTROL IN GEOTECHNICS

The factor affecting the choice and control of permeable fabric membranes in geotechnics are outlined. The types of fiber and fabric and the choice of fabric type for a given application are discussed. Comments are made on laboratory test methods by which the drainage and filtration properties of fabrics may be specified and controlled, as well as on the strength tests of fabrics. The damage susceptibility and the energy absorption of a fabric are also discussed. It is suggested that at this stage the problems outlined make the preparation of a general contractural document by which fabrics may be specified and controlled in works a very difficult task, although an excellent start has been given in the papers of McGowan (1976) and Giroud & Perfetti (1977) and Leflaire & Puig (1977). Not until more is known about the properties required of a fabric in its field application and in relating these back to standardized laboratory tests will this be possible.
