Experience Gained With Y-Steel Sleeper Track on German Rail (DB AG)

The German Rail (DB AG) railway network has had about 600 km of track featuring Y-steel sleepers installed since the mid-1980s. Joint studies by ThyssenKrupp GfT Gleistechnik GmbH and DB Netz AG have been conducted to assess, often with very positive results, this type of track structure's long-term behavior, since Y-steel sleeper track offers high track geometry durability and low required maintenance. Its adoption on DB AG has proven successful for railway line operation traffic loads of up to 20,000 tons and speeds of up to 120 km/h per day. A heavy load Y-steel sleeper track equipped test section has had trials conducted on it since 2001, with a maximum operating traffic load of about 150,000 tons and speed of 140 km/h per day. These trials have been, to date, very successful.
