Grinding as Part of Rail Management Strategy
In this article the author discusses rail grinding as a part of overall rail management. Underlining the importance of an integrated rail maintenance strategy that includes inspection and measurement to allow for condition-based data, preservation elements are listed and exemplary software is illustrated. The article goes on to give an outline of the multistep integrated process, noting certain classes of rail condition data not currently measurable, as well as the levels at which other data is analyzed. Important aspects of rail grinding are noted, along with descriptions of new-generation grinding tools. Rail grinding data is considered one element of several individual inspections and measurements, which are considered collectively to optimize maintenance activities. The mutual dependence of data is emphasized, with some rail wear solutions briefly analyzed.
