Modern tunnelling techniques place high demands on the technical equipment with regard to safety, speed and low operating costs. One problem is the removal of the blasted rock, and this has led an Italian company to design a giant self-propelled transport vehicle. It has a load capacity of 250 tonnes and can remove all the rock from a normal firing in one run without having to turn round. A new type of suspension makes it possible for each wheel axle to retract and "climb" over any obstacles up to 60 cm in height. The prototype, equipped throughout with skf bearings, has now been built. This article is also available in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Swedish. /TRRL/
