CONSOLIDATION THEORY FOR CYCLIC LOADING

In this discussion, the writer refers to a cyclic-load settlement analysis where it was assumed that the material had zero rebound, i.e. an infinite coefficient of consolidation is swell. This yields a very simple solution, which is exact and independent of the length of the cycle of loading. A problem not cited in the original paper is noted, namely that of grain silos where the cyclic part of the load only contributes about half of the total load on the foundation soil. A method is proposed which deals with this problem albeit only approximately.
