Aside from addressing such issues as seepage pressures in foundation cracks, the main purpose of this closure is to clear up a misunderstanding about the water-cement ratio. The recommended ratio of 3:1 by volume noted in the paper relates to the loose volume of a bag as is customary in American and Australian practice and not to the absolute volume of cement as is customary in Europe. On an absoltue basis 3:1 is about equal to 1.2:1 on a loose basis and, not surprisingly Cambefort had regarded this as too thick for reasonable penetration.
