A simple and effective device for slewing-cranes and derricks is described. The Brissonneau & Lotz automatic spreader consists of a fabricated beam with a cross beam at each end, the whole carried on a trolley attached to a rotatable turret suspended by two wires. The corners of the cross beams each have an hydraulically-powered locking button for locating in the container fitting and a positioning probe, as well as a diagonal roller to ease the movement of the spreader within the cell guides. The spreader is of particular value to combiliners trading to undeveloped ports. Maximum security is ensured since all the motions are interlocked and cannot be performed unless it is safe to do so. For instance the operator cannot attempt to hoist unless all the four locks are in the same position, the container is balanced, and the limit switch is disengaged. The effectiveness of the device was shown during a demonstration in the port of Rouen with a 25-t slewing crane fitted with a B + L automatic spreader. Order from BSRA as No. 50,014.
