SPLIT SYSTEM HYDRAULICS. A COMPACT AND FLEXIBLE SOLUTION FOR SHIPBOARD POWER TRANSMISSION

During the last decade shipbuilders have been looking for more efficient ways of transmitting power than at present available and an approach that would allow effective use to be made of shipboard space. These requirements are met by the split system hydraulics transmission which enables an hydraulic pump to be attached to the engine which, in turn, is linked by flexible hose to an hydraulic motor positioned close to the propeller. The advantages of the system are:--1. Prime mover can be located remote from the final drive. 2. Stepless adjustment of speed, power, and torque. 3. Smooth controllable acceleration and decelleration. 4. High starting torque which can be up to 94% of the running torque. 5. Accurate speed regulation. 6. Hydraulic motor can be left in stalled condition for periods without damage. 7. Marine hydraulic drive can withstand emergency stops. Furthermore, the hydraulics transmission is self-lubricated and enables the designer to reduce the total weight of the transmission. Applications to ancillary equipment are also considered.
