BENDING ELEMENT FOR CIRCULAR BEAMS AND PILES

The formulation for a good approximation to a bending finite element of circular cross section is presented. The three-degree-of-freedom-per-nodal-point characteristic of the element permits an efficient solution to the three-dimensional problem of lateral displacement and rotation of transversely loaded circular beams. The good accuracy of the element was confirmed by studying the deflection of cantilever beams subjected to lateral loads. More detailed studies should be undertaken to assess the fundamental characteristics of the element. However, the problem of interest for which the element was developed is the laterally loaded pile problem of interest for which the element was developed is the laterally loaded pile problem (force-displacement relationship). The studies described herein confirmed that the element is accurate and especially suited for solving this pile problem because small diameter piles can be accurately modeled using relatively long, thin elements. /Author/
