VERTICAL VIBRATION OF PILES

Finite element results obtained using an established elastic half space model are presented for the vertical response of pile-soil systems. A simplified lumped mass (LM) model of the pile-soil system similar to a model previously described by Novak is described; results of vertical pile response obtained using this LM Model compare: (1) Excellently with the response calculated based upon the finite element method; and (2) compare within 5% of the results presented by Novak for an incompressible soil. The standard dimensionless magnification factor response curves are shown to depend strongly upon: (1) The ratio of pile and soil Young's moduli; (2) pile length to radius ratio; and (3) static load on pile. Graphs are presented for use in preliminary design that provide estimates of the frequency of maximum response, a sub om, and of the magnification factor at a sub om, M sub rm as functions of the most significant material and geometric variables. The computer program used to solve for the response of the LM model is availalbe elsewhere. /Author/
