Considerable experience of operating a new generation of electric vehicles has brought to light a number of hazards which have served to emphasize the importance of safety in the design and operation of electrical propulsion systems and their associated equipment, most notably the risk of battery explosions. Other problem areas include venting systems, high voltages, traffic safety and the effect of electromagnetic radiation on cardiac pacemaker. Lucas believe that there should be free exchange of information on safety matters between companies involved in electric vehicle development to ensure that these vehicles become as safe as possible as soon as possible. It is also desireable that those responsible for relevant legislation are kept well informed. Complacency is likely to lead to serious setbacks if dangerous shortcomings are later identified in the advanced stages of development of an electric vehicle, necessitating drastic and expensive design changes. Proper attention to safety from the beginning should therefore be an integral part of vehicle design not only to meet specifications required by legislation, but also to ensure the attainment of a commercially successful vehicle.
